What was it about “Young Folks”-- the pop single from Peter, Bjorn and John’s 3rd album, Writer’s Block – that landed this Stockolm-based trio on so many best-of lists in 2006? It could have been the whistling, for one. Or the breezy viral video in which a retro-wholesome young couple forms a band.

“In our culture, music is like medicine, it's part of healthcare; we sing when we're happy, and sing when we're unhappy,” says Walet Amoumine, a vocalist and tindé drummer for Tartit, a group of West African tribespeople turned international musicians. With the release of their second full-length album, Abacabok, Tartit continue their effort to put their culture on the map and improve the lives of a population recovering from decades of drought and conflict.
